Idaho Joins Powerball Xs & Os—But NFL Knowledge Cannot Improve Your Odds
Idaho Lottery players can purchase tickets beginning October 12 for Powerball Xs & Os, a weekly multistate game that replaces numbered balls with NFL team logos.
Idaho’s first eligible drawing will be Sunday, October 18. Its addition brings the game to 24 participating lottery jurisdictions, according to Powerball’s official game page. The estimated jackpot for that drawing is $1.7 million. Powerball
Despite the NFL branding, this is not sports betting. The results have nothing to do with which teams win, lose, cover a point spread or score the most points on Sunday.
How Powerball Xs & Os Works
Each play costs $5. A player chooses eight different team logos from the NFL’s 32 teams or allows the lottery terminal to make a Quick Pick.
Eight winning team logos are then selected randomly during a drawing every Sunday at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, which is 8 p.m. Mountain Time in Idaho.
A ticket wins by matching at least four of the eight randomly drawn teams:
- Match eight: rolling jackpot
- Match seven: $20,000
- Match six: $500
- Match five: $40
- Match four: $7
The jackpot starts at $1 million and increases when no ticket matches all eight teams. Lower-tier prizes can become pari-mutuel under certain circumstances, meaning the amount may be divided among winners instead of remaining a guaranteed fixed payment. Powerball
In the October 11 drawing, nobody matched all eight logos. Five tickets matched seven and won $20,000 each, while 138 tickets won $500 by matching six. Another 16,586 tickets won either $40 or $7. Powerball
Those results occurred before Idaho entered the game and do not indicate which teams are more likely to appear October 18.
The Team Logos Are Really Lottery Numbers
The football presentation may make the game feel strategic, but selecting team logos is mathematically equivalent to selecting numbers.
There are exactly 10,518,300 possible groups of eight teams that can be selected from a field of 32. That explains why the published jackpot odds are 1 in 10,518,300.
The complete odds are:
| Result | Odds |
|---|---|
| Match all eight | 1 in 10,518,300 |
| Match seven | 1 in 54,782.81 |
| Match six | 1 in 1,361.06 |
| Match five | 1 in 92.80 |
| Match four | 1 in 14.14 |
| Win any prize | 1 in 12.16 |
Choosing last season’s playoff teams does not provide an advantage. Neither does picking teams favored to win that week, avoiding teams on a bye, selecting all teams from one conference or studying injury reports.
The eight logos are drawn randomly and independently of actual NFL games. A team’s football record has no influence on its lottery probability. Powerball
Quick Picks also carry the same drawing odds as combinations selected personally. The choice affects which eight logos appear on the ticket, not the probability assigned to that eight-team combination.
Tickets Also Unlock Promotional Entries
Powerball Xs & Os includes a separate national promotional program. Players can register eligible winning or non-winning tickets at PowerballOfficial.com, earn points and allocate those points toward drawings for NFL-related prizes.
Promotional prizes may include NFL Shop gift cards, special experiences and a trip to Super Bowl LXI. The official rules, eligibility requirements and available prizes may vary by jurisdiction.
A ticket can be entered into the promotional program immediately after purchase; players do not need to wait to learn whether it wins the cash drawing. Registering the ticket, however, does not change its chance of matching the randomly selected teams. The promotion is a separate opportunity governed by its own rules. Powerball
Idaho players should retain the original ticket even after registering it. The Idaho Lottery says draw-game prizes must be claimed within 180 days, and winning tickets must be redeemed in the jurisdiction where they were purchased. Players must be at least 18 to buy or redeem Idaho Lottery tickets. Idaho Lottery
LotteryWarrior Take
Powerball Xs & Os is an interesting example of a lottery using familiar sports branding to make a traditional random drawing feel more interactive.
There is nothing wrong with selecting favorite teams for entertainment. A Kansas City Chiefs fan might enjoy building a ticket around Kansas City, while another player might use a Quick Pick. Mathematically, neither approach is superior.
Players should also compare the $5 price with the prize structure instead of focusing only on the relatively short jackpot odds. Odds of 1 in 10.5 million are considerably shorter than those for the main Powerball jackpot, but the starting prize is also dramatically smaller. “Better odds” does not mean good odds or make the purchase an investment.
The football theme can create an illusion of knowledge: someone who follows the NFL closely may feel qualified to construct a stronger ticket. That expertise matters in discussions about real games, but it offers no advantage in a drawing where logos are selected randomly.
Treat each ticket as entertainment, decide on a spending limit before purchasing and never increase play because a favorite team appeared—or failed to appear—in a previous drawing.
Reader question: Would selecting NFL teams make a lottery game more entertaining for you, or would you prefer a traditional numbered drawing?
